About Verdara
Verdara Journeys was founded in 2019 by a burnt-out itinerary designer and a conservation biologist who agreed on one thing: the best travel is mostly made of time, and the industry keeps engineering the time out of it.
Isla Merchant spent ten years building trips for one of Europe’s biggest operators; Tomás Rocha grew up on his grandparents’ quinta in the Douro and worked in regenerative tourism. They met — fittingly — over a lunch that ran three hours long, and founded Verdara on the belief that a journey should be a chain of trust: travelers who trust us, hosts who trust us with their kitchens, and places that are better off for our visits.
Six years on, we run around twenty-four departures a year across six landscapes, and we have turned down many more. Our growth plan is deliberately boring: same places, deeper roots, the occasional new landscape when — and only when — we find the hosts who make it possible.

Isla spent a decade designing itineraries for a large tour operator and left the day she realised she had never been given time to actually meet the people in them. She founded Verdara to build the journeys she couldn’t build there — smaller, slower, and centred on the hosts. She still leads two departures a year, and still cries at the Douro harvest lunch every September.

Tomás grew up in his grandparents’ quinta in the Douro and studied conservation biology before working for a decade in regenerative tourism projects across southern Europe. He looks after Verdara’s partnerships and sustainability work, which mostly means long lunches with farmers, boatbuilders, and hut keepers — a job he describes as ‘unreasonably good’.

Our guides don’t visit these landscapes — they live in them. Each leads only their own region, which is how a walk becomes a series of introductions.
Guide — Portugal & the Azores
Mariana comes from three generations of Douro winemakers and guided walking journeys across Iberia for eight years before joining Verdara. She knows which quinta kitchens bake on which mornings, and plans her valley walks around them. In the Azores she works alongside the Horta research team she first volunteered with as a student.

Callum grew up on a croft near Staffin and has been a mountain leader for twelve years, wintering in northern Norway with the cod fishery long before he began guiding there. He is the reason our Skye evenings end with music, and he maintains — correctly — that weather is just the island introducing itself.

Ana is an internationally certified mountain guide and a beekeeper’s daughter from the Bohinj valley. She spent five seasons cooking in a high mountain hut before deciding she preferred walking people up to dinner instead. Her journeys are famous for arriving at exactly the right meadow at exactly the right hour.

Elias was born in Athens but has family roots — and olive trees — in the Mani, where he returned after years leading long-distance walks across the Balkans. He has walked every kalderimi on the peninsula, knows most of the tower villages’ stories firsthand, and believes no day is complete without a swim.

One honest footnote: Verdara Journeys doesn’t exist. This site is a demonstration built within the HubZero Blueprint ecosystem, showing what production-quality engineering, design, and content look like when applied to a travel company that feels real — down to the guides’ bios and the itinerary trail on every journey page.
