Sustainability
We don’t sell ‘eco’ journeys at a premium — we try to make every journey the responsible one, and to be honest about the parts we haven’t solved. Here is what that means in practice.
Family-run stays, hosts paid directly and properly, and groups small enough to be guests rather than traffic. When a village is better off without an itinerary in it, we leave it alone.
We design journeys to begin from rail hubs where realistic, keep flights out of the package by default, and share honest rail notes for every journey rather than pretending the plane doesn’t exist.
1% of every booking goes to conservation work in the landscapes we visit — named projects, chosen with our hosts, reported plainly every year. No certificates we invented ourselves.
Commitments
Written down so our travelers — and our hosts — can hold us to it too.
Honesty first: most of our travelers still fly to reach us, and no offset scheme changes that arithmetic. We keep flights out of our packages, support rail arrivals with real planning help, and design longer stays so each arrival covers more days — but we won’t pretend a week in Lofoten is carbon-neutral. It isn’t.
Winter income for our hosts is the other open problem. Seasonal tourism concentrates money into a few months; our year-round rates help, but we’re still working out — with our partners, not for them — what good off-season support looks like.
We publish this section because a sustainability page with no unsolved problems is a marketing page.
The 1% fund
Projects are chosen with our hosts, in the landscapes our journeys walk through, and reported to every traveler each spring.
Supporting the dry-stone wallers rebuilding abandoned vineyard terraces, whose walls hold the valley’s soil out of the river.
Funding spat for the community-led reseeding of native oyster beds in the sea lochs our journeys walk beside.
Underwriting the digitisation of thirty years of sperm whale identification records held by our research partners.
If our way of travelling sounds like yours, we’d love to build a journey with you — and show you where your 1% goes.
