Upper Carniola, Slovenia
Alpine meadows, larch forests, rivers the colour of glass
The Julian Alps are what the mountains feel like when nobody is performing. Villages here still cut their meadows by hand in July, beekeeping is practically a national art form, and the Soča river runs a shade of green-blue that photographs always seem to exaggerate but never do.
We walk between valleys rather than over summits: through larch forest and haymeadow, past frescoed churches and racks of drying hay, staying in family-run pensions and one perfect night in a mountain hut above the treeline.
Food is its own reason to come. Alpine Slovenia feeds you like a grandmother — mountain cheese, trout from the Soča, buckwheat žganci, honey from hives painted with folk scenes. Every meal on this journey has a first name attached to it.
Why we come here
One night in a high mountain hut, where dinner is shared at long tables and dawn arrives across the Triglav massif.
A day walking the emerald river from Trenta toward Bovec, swimming where the gorges open out — cold, brief, unforgettable.
Slovenia has more beekeepers per capita than anywhere on earth. Taste why, and learn what the painted hive panels mean.
